Work and Identity

June 07, 2020

What did you want to do when you grew up?

We all need to work to fund the lifestyles and retirements we desire. It’s partially compulsory by society.

When you’re choosing which tech company you want to work at, how do you weight those decisions? What does your payoff equation look like?

For some it’s mostly monetary. They don’t mind trading their time, focus, energy for a higher hourly return.

For some it’s about the status or prestige that certain companies can confer.

When choosing a career or job, it’s important to realize that it intrinsically affects your identity. Whether its your coworkers, the stresses of the job, or people’s perceptions of your profession—there is an effect.
